一般來說液壓缸的液壓油分為礦物油型、乳化型和合成型：
礦物油型分全損耗系統(tǒng)用油、汽輪機(jī)油、通用液壓油、液壓導(dǎo)軌油和液壓油。液壓油有：液壓油、低凝液壓油和數(shù)控液壓油。礦物液壓油是使用多的液壓油。礦物油使用范圍比較廣泛，能夠適應(yīng)大部分液壓油缸的使用。
乳化型又分為油包化液和水包油乳化液，乳化油與水按比例混合，調(diào)制成乳化液，具有銹、清洗、壓性能，適用于金屬加工、切削等過程中作為冷卻液使用。
合成型又分磷酸酯基液壓油和水一乙二醇基液壓油及其他液壓油。
在選擇液壓油時(shí)要考慮好使用環(huán)境、使用溫度、密封圈是否耐腐蝕等因素。一般來說不是情況選擇礦物油是比較好的選擇。
