Purpose and Application

1.This standard specifies a method for the determination of the behaviour of normal flamable building materials when exposed to the flame of a burner acc. to DIN 50051 part 1 (DIN EN ISO  6941)  under  defined  conditions.  This  test  procedure  is  suitable  for  controlling  the similarity of products with respect to behaviour when exposed to flames and for comparing the product. In addition to this the test results may give hints to the combustion behaviour of materials in praxis. 

The behaviour of materials against impact of flames depends in reality among others of the thickness of the product. Therefore if is advisable to execute the test according to this standard with specimen of different thickness. 

2. Brief description of the procedure 

A vertically arranged specimen, which is placed in the burning cabinet, will be exposed to a defined flame either at the lower edge (K = edge-flaming) or in the middle of the lower half of the sample (F = surface-flaming). The purpose of the procedure is the determin, whether and in which time the top of the flame reaches a defined mark on the specimen. 

3. Specimen (sample) 

Five each specimen are produced for each procedure. 

Procedure K: specimen 190 mm length and 90 mm width Procedure F: specimen 230 mm length and 90 mm width 

4. Test rig 

The complete test rig consists of 

(1)Burning cabinet acc. to DIN 50050 part 1, which has to be placed into fume cupboard 

(2)Gas burner acc. to DIN  50051 part  1 with connection to propane gas, which can be  brought  in  vertical  position  for  controlling  the  hight  of  the  flame  and  can  be  moved  horizontically. 

(3) Specimen holder consisting of two parts for mounting the specimen and fixing it by screws  or springs and a device for the vertically mounting of the specimen holder.

In addition to the scope of supply you need a device for measuring the duration of time from the  start  to  the  reaching  of  the  measuring  mark  (accuracy  0.1  sec.)  and  a  device  for measuring the thickness of the specimens (accuracy +/- 0.1 mm). 

5. Execution of the test 

The climate in the laboratory respectively in the fume cupboard should be done acc. to DIN 50014.
